Help! I Have Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction can make intimacy difficult and decrease your quality of life as a result. We discuss what might be causing your erectile dysfunction and how to treat it here.

Most men struggle with either getting or keeping an erection at some point in their lives. However, if you have difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection on a regular basis, you may have erectile dysfunction.

And while it may feel incredibly uncomfortable to talk to someone about your struggles with erectile dysfunction, know that it’s very common — affecting 30 million men — and plenty of treatments are available.

At Atlas Health Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada, our team of men’s health experts is passionate about helping you achieve a high quality of life and well-being in all areas, including your sexual health.

This month’s blog explores what you need to know about erectile dysfunction, including some causes and treatments for this common condition.

What can cause erectile dysfunction?

Having consistent issues getting or maintaining an erection can stem from a number of factors, both physical and emotional.

Not getting enough blood flow to your penis is the number one cause of erectile dysfunction, and many physical conditions can lead to this issue. Conditions that can lead to erectile dysfunction include hormonal disorders, low testosterone levels, vascular disease, chronic kidney disease, pelvic injuries, and obesity.

Your mind and your body need to work together for optimal sexual performance. Fear of intimacy, relationship conflicts, high-stress levels, or depression or anxiety can impact your ability to get an erection.

Your risk for developing erectile dysfunction goes up if you:

  • Are over the age of 50
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have high cholesterol
  • Smoke
  • Live a sedentary lifestyle
  • Have heart disease
  • Use drugs or drink too much alcohol regularly

It’s important to note that not all men over 50 struggle with erectile dysfunction. In fact, you can easily be sexually active well into your 80s. Your risk of developing the condition simply goes up as you age.

How is erectile dysfunction treated?

If you’re struggling with erectile dysfunction, don’t let any feelings of awkwardness or embarrassment keep you from discussing your sexual health with our team. Our compassionate providers prioritize your comfort and listen to your concerns and questions intently.

We can then review all your symptoms in depth and perform a comprehensive physical exam to determine what exactly is causing your erectile dysfunction. This allows us to make a treatment plan that works best for you.

Our treatments vary, and our team can help you choose which one works for you and your lifestyle.

The first is hormone replacement therapy which helps boost testosterone levels, and it’s available in the form of injections or pellets. You can also try taking prescription oral medications such as Viagra® a few hours before sex to help with an erection. Lastly, we have an injectable medication that assists with blood flow for stronger and better erections.
